For this past year I, and several others, have been seeking the Lord as to His purposes in this next season for this mission house I started almost 3 years ago. Although nothing is official yet, I ask you to keep praying, as it seems a wonderful mission group will be buying the house and making it an outreach for lay missionaries who will continue the present mission of prayer on Monday evenings and street outreach weekly, and also serve in Steubenville in various ways. But it's not yet definite, so if you know of a religious community, or a lay mission group interested in buying the house, have them contact me!

Thank Father God!!!

I see that my gifting is being a fire-starter, a missionary to dark places to turn the lights on so that others can come in and carry on the work. I've done my part... and now it's my time to move on.

It seems the Lord is moving me back to California, within 6 hours of my parents, uncle, aunt and sister and cousins. I will be going out in January to check out "Oakhurst, CA" where a YWAM base is located, a good Catholic church and a small town at 3000 ft elevation near to Yosemite National Park. I ask you to please pray for me to follow His leading and wait on Him to find the right place to settle down in this next season.

He is calling me in these next years to "come away" and rest, seek His heart and grow even more solid in who I am in Christ and to walk with confidence in the Kingdom of God here on earth, as it is in heaven. I will keep you posted at: katiegesto.blogspot.com

I want to honor ALL those who have sowed into Mama Nita's Ministry in these past 3 years. It will continue to give fruit with the next mission group. The furniture and other donations will stay and remain a blessing to this city that God is transforming. The profits from selling this house will go into the All for Him fund to support missions overseas and other missionaries that I believe in along with some short term missions that God will be calling me to in the next few years. Thank you to every person who has given of their time and money and I believe God has and will continue to bless you for that!! There are so many of you!

Keep praying with us as we await the final decision of those that God desires to buy this house... How exciting to see what the new chapter of this house will bring to this city!!

God bless you!

we petition the obama administration to:
STOP the BOMBING on the Mother of Mercy Hospital in Nuba Mountains, Sudan!

A large hospital where I used to serve in Gidel, Nuba Mountains is being directly targeted by the Khartoum Government. It is the only hospital within several hundreds of miles and we used to even get Arab patients coming for help from Khartoum.

http://www.cmmb.org/supporting-mother-mercy-hospital

Despite bombing around the hospital, the foreign and local staff, many who are Americans and European nuns, have never had bombing on their compound.

This week, the tables have turned. We beseech President Obama to stop the Antenov planes that are barraging the hospital grounds daily. They are under constant attack unknown to the world. Limbs are being cut off from the shrapnel, patients are staff are at risk but persevering to still treat people amidst this hellish attack.

PLEASE HELP THEM!
Ages ranged from 82 to 15, 8 different churches represented, black, white, hispanic and all of us building each other up in love. Truly His oil flows when we dwell together in unity! Pastor Mary Burton sharing her heart about knowing who we are in Christ and not letting the enemy bully us. Though she and her sister in law Mama Nita just attended the funeral of a family member murdered recently, they came and shared with us despite their trials and we were all edified by one another.

While a few of us were chatting on the street corner as all were leaving, a man walked by and I asked, "Excuse me sir, we just had a wonderful morning with God. May we pray for a blessing for you?" He opened up and welcomed the prayer. I asked, "Would you like us to pray for anything in particular?" Without much hesitation he replied, "Demons. They're all around. I need to get free of them." He was an everyday man, not mentally ill, just aware that evil around is so oppressive and wanting to be free.

We of course introduced him to our Friend Jesus, explaining that when He lives inside us, no matter if the gates of Hell are around us, we are free and at peace when we trust in Him. We then prayed for this man. He made the sign of the cross after and said he was Catholic. Those are 2 new people that I've met this week who are my neighbors who will hopefully go to Church with me tomorrow and begin learning to walk again in a life of freedom.

God... YOU ARE MOVING in our CITY!

I want to urge you to reach out to people you meet everyday... talk to them....offer to pray a blessing for them in your own way. God will pray through you. Take a risk today. It may save someone's life. Stop making excuses about how you are not equip. Do you really think I am equipped to live in an inner city with the gates of hell surrounding me most days? I'm not---without Christ. And like you who follow Jesus, I AM equipped because He tells us we have: "Christ in you the hope of glory". Colossians 1:27

Later, a friend in a local feeding ministry said that this man who has been struggling with drugs, told her that we prayed with him and it really helped him. He's been going back to church with them... how beautiful that we are all called to serve in different ways and when the Body works together, it creates such a beautiful tapestry of His love. .

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-278152237447964967.post-28656286077334458562014-04-20T13:31:00.002-07:002014-04-20T13:36:23.067-07:00An Alignment is Happening... A very Joyful Easter Season to Everyone!!

This is a season in the Church for new things—a New Springtime—an emerging of a glorious Bride that will so shine in the world that all people will run to the Light that shines from us who are so prepared as the wise Virgins were.

I had a picture of a great fishing net with people of many of different denominations holding the net--but all of us united in our passionate love for Jesus. Somehow we were standing on the water all gripping the net. Many of us didn’t know the person next to us, but we were united in this worldwide task. Then Jesus, also holding the net looked at us all. He instructed us without words, as we knew what He was saying in our hearts. We all knew:
“When I give you the nod, PULL on the net. Watch me intently. Wait for my nod.”

There was an anticipation that this would be an incredible catch and that we were not to be distracted. We had no idea how long we would have to wait there, gripping the net firmly, but we all knew one thing: Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus.

Each person knew within that if they would let up their grip, allow themselves to be distracted by looking at the others holding the net, or daydreaming about even theological things, or focusing on our own strength for such a mighty task, they would becoming the weak link and the pulling of the net would not accomplish the task of a clean, full catch and fish would escape because of my weak grip.

Focus on Jesus, simply that. Looking into His eyes and waiting, watching, anticipating for something great to happen and knowing I had a part in it, along with each person holding that net.

I believe God is positioning us Christians—those who are attentive and listening for His every move and who are rending our hearts to be sensitive to His. We are being positioned around heaven’s net. We are being trained in our personal lives to hear his voice well, notice His gestures so that when the moment comes and the King of Kings nods and pulls on the net, we will immediately respond with all of our being to pull with Him and watch for a great harvest of fish into the Kingdom.

It is like the story of the virgins who had their oil ready for when the Bridegroom would arrive. Will you be among those of us who have our eyes fixed on Jesus? I am giving everything I have to be ready and to be among those holding that net, having my oil ready, asking God daily for the grace to stay faithful. Will you join us? And if you are already holding on, good on you! Decide to keep your grip strong and Holy Spirit may you strengthen our grip even more resolutely!

These are exciting times to live in! We are on the verge of unprecedented outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon our Church and our Nation. And it starts in our own neighborhoods—it starts at the Kmart, the Grocery store—our workplace. This outpouring of the Holy Spirit is really an outpouring of His Presence. I believe the Jesus longs to flow out of the Eucharist to be bread for all and He does that so often through you and me. We are offered at Mass what looks like a crumb of bread, and it becomes a whole bakery where people all over the city can be blessed by His Body and Blood through us.

Jesus was moved by compassion to see with His Father’s eyes of love the lost, the broken, the sick, the rich and the poor alike. Where He walked He intentionally released His Father’s Kingdom, “Everyone who came to Him was healed” (Matt 8:16) and He commissioned us to “do greater works than these” (John 14:12).

Why do I see these times in our world’s history so exciting? A time when there are more martyrs than all of Church history? Why am I hopeful about these days when it seems the darkness is increasing and our Governments have big problems? Because Jesus lives inside of me! “Christ in you the hope of glory”! (Col 1:27) Releasing His Presence in healing, freedom from bondage, prophetic words of encouragement looks like something amazing. It is more than just living a quiet witness of the Gospel. It is intentional, it is supernatural. A small candle extraordinarily brightens up a large dark room. Similarly, you and I are called to be on the offense and run into the dark places that are around us and see Him do “infinitely more than we can ask or imagine” (Eph 3:20).

How can we as His Body, release His Presence, His Kingdom in greater measures in these exciting times? Great question. “Come and see” Jesus said. Please come to this conference firstly to PRAY FOR MORE of God in your life. It is from our intimacy with God that fruitfulness will flow. Come and hear our talks on how you can practically give healing, miracles and freedom to a hurting, broken world around you.

I will be sharing with you about my experience of praying with prostitutes, drug addicts and dealers, business owners, people on planes, along with some stories from my 7 years serving in Sudan and Mozambique where I saw the blind see, the deaf hear and the lame walk, lepers cleansed and even the almost dead raised. I do not have a “special gift of healing”—I just understand who I am in Christ and I want to impart that onto you and give you many resources to press into this when you go home! Come and be a part of this amazing conference! Be blessed!
POWER, LOVE & HEALING
PRACTICAL WORKSHOP
Steubenville, OH
November 1st & November 2nd
9 am – 4 pm daily

Jesus said, “You will do even greater things.” “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers.” Matt 10:8, John 14:12 This is our inheritance as sons and daughters to demonstrate the Father’s love in miraculous ways. If you’re hungry to grow in your gift of healing, please join us for these days for your faith to be stretched even farther. Contact us asap if you want to attend. The hungriest people will be invited to join us on Day 1, and others for Day 2 and 3. It is a Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant gathering and all ages are welcome. The only requirement: HUNGER for GOD!

This is the season for Christians to demonstrate the gifts of prophecy, word of knowledge, and healing on the STREETS! As we demonstrate the love of God through revelation and seeing people healed in God’s power, their lives are changed—and so are we!

What a summer it's been! Thanks to everyone from Youth Works who traveled from NY, MI, IN, OH, WV, PA, KY, MA, WI and NJ to help us rehabilitate the house! Thanks also for the donation from a grant organization which will help us put on a first floor bathroom and refinish our sidewalks and stairs!

Even better than the physical restoration that has been happening, God has been putting a few and older people in our path who needed some encouragement. Heroin and alcohol are terrible addictions, destroying the inside and outside of a person's life. Please pray for those whom we are reaching out to, "Doyle", "Reba" "Hanna" and "Jon". Pray they get free of their addictions and wisdom if we are to be a part of that by letting them withdraw in our house with 24/7 prayer coverage. It's not a withdrawal you would want to do alone.

Please pray also for the praise and worship we have weekly on Monday nights at 7 on our porch, that it will continue to bring grace and inspiration to our community. All are welcome! Thanks Debbie and Mel for leading that!

We are enjoying a weekly DVD series on Tuesday's at 7 pm called, "Power and Love" which challenge us to live the basic Gospel more wholeheartedly. We are also showing Documentaries the 1st and 3rd Fridays at our house and then going out on the streets after to encourage people we see and pray for the neighborhood.

Please also pray for another few long term volunteer who can share in the mission. It's been a challenge to find people committed to this great challenge who can raise their own support and willing to work hard. Anna Hogan was here all summer and was and AMAZING gift. She definitely left an imprint on the people in this city! David was going to stay but ended up getting a job on an Indian Reservation. Sarah Littlefield is spending time here in between serving in Pittsburgh speaking about purity in the schools and pregnancy centers. She is such a gift!

And thank you for your prayers for me. It's been a challenge the last few weeks for various reasons and I covet your prayers to grow in intimacy and strength in the Lord and to grow in grace and wisdom to lay my life down for Jesus through each of the people he connects me to in this city. This is great training ground for any future mission work I will do in Asia or wherever He calls me. I'm so grateful for all He is doing in and through us.

Amidst a lot of violence and discouragement in the natural in our city this summer, we as God's kids, are beckoned to believe boldly that God is alive and well and is longing and willing to be KING of this City. He is pouring out his grace to all those hungry and thirsty to be quenched by it. Like Abraham, we have to SEE the promise as if it were for today and walk in faith and sacrifice to make it happen in His grace.

I pray you do that in your own neighborhoods. Reach out to the one God puts before you today and make yourself vulnerable to BECOME LOVE. This is our identity--our call as sons and daughters of the One who did it so valiantly and beautifully for us!

God bless you and thank you for praying!

Love,
Hello dear Friends!

Greetings from Mama Nita's in Steubenville! I wanted to share with you some wonderful thanksgiving and results of your prayers and support...

* David Neira is volunteering with us: a recent graduate of Ave Maria University and will likely commit to a year of volunteer service. He's an answer to all our prayers... If you'd like to contact him directly to be in his prayer/support team, here's his email: jdavidneira@gmail.com

* Anna Hogan, missionary in Jamaica this past year and graduate of Franciscan last year is with us for the summer raising funds and refreshing herself before returning to missions. If you know of any young volunteers who want to serve at least 6 months in Jamaica, please email her: ahogan117@yahoo.com

* a Grant is on it's way I hope! PNC bank will vote this week to see if we fit for a grant to put on the bathroom, sidewalk and handicapped entrance! Keep thanking God for His provision.

* May 5th Day of Prayer, Repentance and Dedication of our city to the Lord was wonderfully graced. We hope to continue praise and worship on the court house steps this summer monthly. Probably about 150 people attended and prayed with us.

* 10 Franciscan students stayed with us for 2 weeks and offered service in our city during May. They were wonderful!

* Early February we worked to get the local public pool which was deemed to be closed for the summer, opened if a non profit would run it. Katie Hess, also a FUS graduate wrote for a grant, connected with the local city government and a non profit and it's opening TODAY! Way to go Katie! Thanks God for your favor!

* Several people have stayed here for weekends when they were visiting the University and left us donations and that's helped us a lot. Pass the word for when you know of people visiting Steubenville that we have an unofficial bed and breakfast here!

* Our city has a new undercover drug task force called "the Shield". We are praying for God to use this group to clean up our city.
* I am officially unemployed...yes, it's a praise report (Romans 8:28). So that's allotted me more time for the mission but hopefully in the near future I will be working again by mid summer.

* Youth Works and Joshua summer projects will send volunteers this summer weekly to help us in the attic, and putting on the new bathroom and other jobs! Thanks to everyone ahead of time for helping!

* I go to Lake Tahoe for a week to celebrate my Mom's 75th birthday. I am so grateful for her example in my life and training me at a young age to serve. She has modeled it so well for me even to this day. Love you Mom!

* Mama Nita Slappy (whom we named this after) was diagnosed 2 months ago with breast cancer. She had a mastectomy, is cancer free according to both faith and the scans and is back to her wonderful self-- we are believing for her to live to over 100 years like her Mom!

* We had a wonderful evening of a talk by Zachary King about his conversion as a leader in the satanic cult to Catholicism. If you're interested to hear more, it's really worth learning and hearing: mysticforgod@yahoo.com in Lahigh Acres, Florida.

* A group of us from here and out of state are pressing in hard for the fullness of what God prophesied through Pope John Paul promising us the "New Springtime" that is about to emerge int he Catholic Church. We strongly believe it is key to know our identity as the Father's Sons and Daughters and to walk in belief of who He is and the fullness of whom the Church is which includes seeing His power and love released on a daily basis through our lives and around us. If this is also burning in your heart, please let us know as we want to connect us all together in prayer and purpose.

* We continue to have a prayer meeting on Monday nights, teaching DVD series and pot luck on Tuesdays with the Power and Love teaching series, and praying on the streets on Wednesday afternoons, and movie nights will start up again every other Fridays along with "porch ministry" of just talking to people in our neighborhood daily and praying for the city.

Prayer requests please:
* Grace for all the volunteers to adjust and hear His call and voice

There is SOOOooo much good happening in our town... God is on the move! Here's just one...

This is the letter we are sending to all the schools this week:
Dear Steubenville Schools:

We are excited to offer you an opportunity to join in a community wide outreach that we hope will bring a sense of solidarity, confidence and hope to Steubenville in a fun and energetic way, through the creativity, humor and insight of your students.

Inspired by the, “Kid President Pep Talk,” on Youtube, we began to question how to harness the optimism and energy we saw demonstrated in that short clip, and transform it into a dynamism that would motivate our community. We know the greatness and potential of Steubenville, but in recent months for a number of reasons, much of the positive energy has been stifled.

To turn that around in a positive direction we’ve created a “Kid Mayor Pep Talk” video creation opportunity that we would like to share with your school. It’s exciting! If you haven’t seen the Youtube video, just look up “Kid President Pep Talk” and you will understand.

As I write this, a promotional video is being produced by the Franciscan University of Steubenville TV Production Class that in the theme of the, “Kid President Pep Talk,” that will challenge your students to make Steubenville AWESOME. This promotional video will be shot with local students and be less than 5 minutes in length. It will ask your students, “What is it going to take to make Steubenville awesome? What are you going to do to make Steubenville awesome? What would you say in a pep talk for Steubenville?” It will introduce a video opportunity whereby students of grades 3 through 12 may submit videos of 2 minutes or less and all who submit will get public recognition. There will be separate categories for Elementary (3-6), Jr. High (7-8) and High School (9-12).

We are excited about the potential to invigorate our community that this project has, but it cannot be accomplished without your support. We would like to ask you as a school for 3 things:

1 . Select a contact person at your school through whom we can consistently communicate about this competition. Please have that person e-mail Katie Hess at khessfus@gmail.com, a volunteer at Mama Nita’s Coffeehouse Ministry, for further information.

2. Schedule a 20 minute school assembly on March 8 or during the week of March 11-15, during which the DVD including the “Kid President Pep Talk,” and promotional video for Steubenville Kid Mayor submissions will be shown on a big screen. For this event, your school would have to provide all equipment. We will bring the DVD to your school the afternoon of March 7, or the morning of March 8, dependent the pre-arrangements of your contact person.

We will be happy to have a member of our team come to your school to address the student body after the DVD and provide further details and motivation about this project. If viewing the DVD in a large assembly setting is not possible due to facility limitations or scheduling challenges, the DVD can be shown in all classes of one subject. We will have full details for this event as well as submission forms available on the United Peace Movement website www.unitedpeacemovement.com in the near future.

3. Schedule a second school assembly, April 19th, or after, to show a DVD of highlights from the video submissions of how to make Steubenville awesome, along with an award ceremony for participants at your school, a motivational speech, an address from a city leader, and/or presentation of opportunities to get involved (summer activities, volunteer opportunities). We would like to work with you to cater to the needs of your students and make this an energized event, celebrating the vision of the students and empowering the faith and potential they see.

Thank you for all that you are already doing to serve the students here in Steubenville. We look forward to working with you to build momentum that will empower student to articulate the dreams they have for this city, and give them courage and optimism in making those dreams a reality.

Sincerely,

Kid Mayor Planning Committee

This project is a joint volunteer effort of the United Peace Movement, Franciscan University of Steubenville TV Production class, Mama Nita’s Coffeehouse Ministry, and other energized citizens of Steubenville.

God chose to gift His gift of Jesus in a world torn by Middle Eastern strife—Herod’s unjust political tyranny, corruption, slavery, poverty prevailing among the family Jesus was born into—and yet His Mother was bursting with Hope and Faith: “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord! My spirit rejoices in God my Savior!”

That’s what I am feeling here as I live at Mama Nita’s Coffee House Ministry home—a place so many of you have been a part of this past year in so many ways. I’m so amazed at how God has been moving in and through us this past year! It’s really been an adventure of encountering His Presence and seeking to make this new mission a place where God’s “Christmas Presence” can flourish.

To re-cap for some of you, I returned from Africa in the Fall of 2011 and bought a run down 5200 sq ft mansion this past January. After uniting with my friends from different churches we recognized it is time to “do something” that will usher in God’s unity among us Christians in Steubenville and facilitates encounters with our Loving God in this downtown area. It’s now my home.

“Doing good in the hood” is our motto down here, and that’s what’s been happening. Here are some highlights we can join with Mary in “proclaim the greatness of the Lord”:

• Over 3000 volunteer hours from people around the nation to work on the house and over 20 churches represented
• A weekly praise and worship and intercession time on Mondays and prayer for the city twice monthly
• Several people recommitting their life to God through our ministry and many receiving prayer and relationships with neighbors deepening
• 29 of you sponsored windows so now ALL of our 38 windows are replaced! (There’s still 4 left!)
Others supplied rugs, furniture, curtains, bedding, kitchen supplies, etc so that I hardly had to buy anything!
• A real sense of “God’s about to move in our city” from many of our local intercessors and a move on the Franciscan Campus of student’s hunger to grow in the gifts of the Holy Spirit
• A few movie nights with Furious Love and Father of Lights and a mini concert by Chat Smith
• Last but not least, a growth in my heart to hunger to have a deeper capacity to love God and others—keep me in prayer to continue to grow in generosity in loving others.

I have been praying for local people to be moved to volunteer here. Not primarily because I need the help (which I do!) but because it’s a sign of something the Holy Spirit is doing among the poor downtown to “give back” and find dignity and pleasure in giving of their time and talents.

On one of the warm November days I decided to inaugurate our winter with one last mow of the little bit of weeded-lawn we have. A middle aged man walked by with a few empty jugs. “Hi—how you doing?” I chimed in as a I took a break from my mowing.
I soon found out “Lawrence” was moving from Fort Steuben apartments to a house around the corner. “I got to get out of that place. It’s bad. The drugs. There’s no peace or quiet there. It’s bad there.” Since he didn’t have enough money for his water company deposit, he was walking 10 blocks to get water for his grandkids he was taking care of and his girlfriend.

Since that time, I’ve gotten to know Lawrence and his girl, Lauraine who is a patient at the free clinic I serve at on Thursdays. He now knows how to use my front load washer which was donated by Franciscan University, and pushes our neighbor Ruby’s grocery cart with jugs of water he’s filled from our faucets. After a few weeks of this, he said, “Do you need help around here? I’m a jack of all trades. I want to give back to you. You’ve helped us out so much. I want to give back.”

So now, Lawrence (Ruby calls him ‘Whispers’ for some reason I’ve not discovered yet) is putting on mudding to the dry wall that Jonathan put up and will start on some basement work next week. Walter, another neighbor who was the first to volunteer back in February is the first local person to donate financially to our mission and helped pay for the Boiler company to evaluate our boiler. “Katie, don’t worry” he always tells me. God is moving in our people down here… Good in the hood.

It’s really coming together. God is doing a great work here. May the Lord especially bless those who have served here this last year either from afar through prayers and giving and those near who have joined me in doing so much to get this house and mission up and running.

We still have far to go but it’s amazing how far we’ve come. I thank you God for the grace and favor!

So, I say to you, my friends: “Don’t worry…God wants to give back to you, fill you, refresh you. Amidst so much turmoil in our world, in the quietness, in the stillness, HE is HERE. Jesus will never leave you no matter how much you may get sidetracked. God is GOOD and is so ready to heal your hearts, fill you up and strengthen you to be a blessing to those around us.

May your spirits rise up like Mary’s does and say with all the Saints and Angels amidst any trial that may be going on and say, “My soul proclaims the greatness of my God!”
Much love to each of you and your families!! You’re all welcome to visit anytime!!
We've come a LONG way since the Spring! Though we still do not have heat yet due to a leaking gas line (yes, the gas is shut off!) we are doing great. Here are some photos to show you how far we've come.
Please pray for us to find someone to fix our gas lines and then get our boiler working. It's quite cold in this 5000 square foot brick home! Brrrrrrrrrr! But as I always say, "All for Him!" God bless you all and thanks for your prayers and support for us.

What a beautiful celebration we had on September 29th at Mama Nitas House to celebrate all our wonderful volunteers who have worked so hard to

restore the house to it's currently beautiful condition.
Over 2500 volunteer hours have been donated since we started cleaning out the house last February. Over 20 churches, young and old all helped. Thanks to those of Youth Works who traveled from Minnesota, Philadelphia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Texas and Massachusetts (and others States!) to spend time in Steubenville to serve our people. You're beautiful!
Thanks to each of you local Steubenvillers who have served so joyously! God bless you and reward you! I and Joan are living there now and though we still have much to do before the winter hits to get the house insulated, we are enjoying the opportunity to live and serve downtown.
We will soon be inviting people on Monday nights for praise and worship at our house, and have been praying for the city the 1st and 3rd Mondays of every month. God is doing something beautiful in our city! We sense it, and are beginning to see it.
Pray with us and pray for YOUR city to be renewed and for revival to break forth. God's love culture is the answer to our nation's issues. When individual hearts are changed and set free-- we're going to really see some beautiful things happen around us. Thanks for your support!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-278152237447964967.post-10296178332205086872012-07-01T18:48:00.000-07:002012-07-01T18:48:04.506-07:00Adopt a Window!

Dave Gossett of the Herald Star came down this week and wrote a great article for us. So far, 2 people have already called me to volunteer! Whahoo!
In case you missed reading it, here it is.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-278152237447964967.post-85496925855905717142012-03-29T09:28:00.001-07:002012-03-29T09:29:22.972-07:00God's doing something in our city...

We had an amazing time with Franciscan student volunteers for several days and Saturday a bunch come also along with some kids from the local High School. Please pray for Mama Nita, (AKA Juanita Slappy) has had her second Grandson shot in the last month in our downtown area. The first boy died and now Leroy is stable. This drug-gang war has to stop in Jesus' Name! It's so sad. We know our house will in some way will have a part in stopping this war of revenge.

Please also pray for our friends and brothers and sister in Nuba Mountains where I served a year ago for 2 months. Darius, a Sudanese doctor and dear friend, emailed me an hour ago saying there is heavy fighting near them and they are constantly in the surgical room mending near fatal wounds from the antenov bomber plane. The northern regime has declared all out war against the Christians and sympathetic Muslims in the north and have declared officially "Sharia law". These brave missionaries will stay there to care for the poor and wounded. Pray with me, please, for their courage, health, strength, wisdom and protection. Please pray for an end to the war there and for wisdom from other countries if they should intervene so that this genocide doesn't continue.

I wish I could be there, but God has made it clear to me to do this mission in Steubenville where we have our own war going on. Again, thanks so much for your prayers. God is teaching me so much lately. One thing is that, like Mother Mary, we can be small but mighty. "He who is mighty has done great things for me!" Luke 1. I may be only one small lady in the midst of a drug and corruption war in Steubenville, but together with many hands all enveloped in the Lord's hands, we can change this city around to become a city that loves God's heart and honors and respects each other. It CAN happen. I'm going to be childlike enough to believe it. It is NOT impossible for God. Please stand with me on this to see it happen.

I was VERY encouraged yesterday with a phone call from Pastor Jason from a church around the corner from us. He heard what we are doing and said something like, "That is exactly what we are seeing around the world-- God is moving mightily in the out of the box types of places like Christian coffee houses and people are having encounters with God in beautiful ways. I fully support you and if you need anything let me know!" My own parish is doing a fund raiser this week for us, too. God, YOU are moving in downtown Steubenville! Have your way!

Thanks for all those volunteering and sending words of encouragement. They mean a lot to us! God is really doing something great our city... Let's believe and pray for more!

I wish you all a very wonderful Holy Week and soon Easter.

Big hugs to you all!
He's sending such amazing people to us to build our Mama Nita's family and renovate our house...Bernadine, who just lost her grandson, Lee in a fire 3 weeks ago has been coming to volunteer to fix out house up. Lou Tucker, a local plumber said, "I will do your plumbing work under one condition: you don't pay me for my service. Lisa Reeves Foster cleaned up so many dusty dirty clothes and washed them and dropped them at Good Will and threw the rest out the window into our 30 yard dumpsters.

Luke Yanko and Ben Bowers plunged into the grotesque basement with gas masks and cleaned the whole thing out to fill up another dumpster. Brave men they are! And Walter Malorie from the local Pentecostal church has come faithfully to look out for me and serve to clean out the house out of the goodness of his heart. Mary O'Connor, my dear friend in all this, has done so much also along with hauling away the tree branches we cut off from the jungle outside. And we can't forget Mike Givens and Mark Richardson who are both doing windows and electric at cost. Wow, thanks Guys! Jonathan and Johanna Mears who donated the electrical supplies and did most of the work also. Thanks Ray for chainsawing the trees down, drilling the ground rod holes and shootin' the breeze with us-- and thanks Gary Bebee for serving in so many ways too!

Then we were blessed by 20 Franciscan students who came this week to clean, paint and dig up roots from the bushes outside. It now looks like a home! You guys are amazing. They teamed up with the Big Red High school kids and both cheered each other on and got to know one another. I felt like a proud mother watching them interact. Chris Sparks, Anna and so many other Franciscan students have been coming down regularly to brighten our house and bring so much joy and life to us!
Romans 1:21 – Even though men “knew” God they didn’t “give thanks” and their foolish heart was darkened. The list goes on and on.

I am touched this week about the importance of Gratefulness... I am so grateful. I think Gratefulness is going to be a charism of our house because that grace needs to be revitalized in our city. It is the foundation of all virtues it seems to me. Romans 1:21 says that even though men “knew” God they didn’t “give thanks” and their foolish heart was darkened. Darkness pervades our downtown area. Join us in becoming Eucharistic people-- actively grateful is the meaning of that word, Eucharist.

Pray for me and for all of us please to allow this grace of Gratefulness to permeate our lives and overflow into the streets around us!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-278152237447964967.post-85918364281493381542012-02-12T08:09:00.000-08:002012-02-12T08:09:54.642-08:00It's official! We have the house!Thank God! We have the house in Steubenville for our ministry! We filled a 20' dumpster yesterday within 6 hours! Thanks to Ben, Luke, Jonathan, Matt, Chris, Mike, Mary, Lisa and Vaughn Foster and Walter for helping! 2 more dumpster to go! Attached is a summary of what is on our heart for this mission. Pray with us for renewal, unity and restoration in Steubenville. God bless you!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-278152237447964967.post-48632246178514055782012-01-12T16:50:00.000-08:002012-01-12T16:50:31.459-08:00January to March happeningsThanks so much for your desire to help us get started at Mama Nita’s Coffee House!

We’re starting from scratch, on a breadth of faith, trusting the Lord to work beautiful things through each of our efforts. I’m sure we will see our community coming together through many of you to come down and volunteer, praying for us and our city, those who come share their gifts, talents and materials.

Here’s a summary of what will be going on from end of January to March:
* January 14th, clean up day! Katie & the owner agree on the sale price.
• Jan 16 to Feb 7th: Cleaning up the house and painting the rooms
• Decorating after the walls are painted & furnishing the rooms
• Opening up the house for various group meetings that need a place to meet—most likely opening the house for that by end of February. If your group needs a place to meet, contact me with your groups information
• Meeting weekly to pray for the city: starting by mid-February.
• Volunteers to be present during the week to be ‘listening ears’ to people in our city who just need a cup of coffee and to talk. If this interests you, please contact me.

What things do we need? I will make a list below of things we would love donated. I will update this weekly, so when we no longer need it, you will see it’s been taken care of. There is a separate document called, “Donated Items Needed”Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-278152237447964967.post-79325575840950647692012-01-04T19:19:00.000-08:002012-01-04T19:19:23.362-08:00We're almost mission-house owners! Pray that we can soon close the deal on this house. Though it needs a lot of work, it's got great potential! These are the beginnings of Mama Nita's Coffee House!
