What we're all about...

A group of us mission-hearted Christians in Steubenville, with a passion to see God transform our city got together in November of 2011. We decided to join together to do what we can do to make Christ more present in our city. Though we were all real busy with our own work and ministries, we knew that if we did this ministry TOGETHER, we could see something beautiful happen.

And so "Mama Nita's" was birthed in the Spring of 2012.

Katie purchased a gorgeous small mansion "in the hood" of Steubenville--the perfect place to see transformation of our city take place. A few of us volunteers are living there, building relationship with neighbors and inviting others into our home for weekly praise and worship times, prayer for the city weekly, and starting positive entertainment evenings... Unity in the Body of Christ is organically emerging from everyone's generous hearts and hands to see this ministry come to fruition.

God is saying to us it's to be a place, a ministry that brings people together for the sake of encountering His Love and Presence and building Unity in the Body of Christ. I think the fact that over 3000 joy-filled volunteer hours have been given since we started will speak for itself!

We're excited about what God's gonna do at Mama Nita's Coffee House! God bless you! Please keep us in prayers!

Jesus said, “You will do even greater things.” “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers.” Matt 10:8, John 14:12 This is our inheritance as sons and daughters to demonstrate the Father’s love in miraculous ways. The hungriest people will be invited to join us on Day 1, and others for Day 2 and 3. It is a Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant gathering and all ages are welcome. The only requirement: HUNGER for GOD!

This is the season for Christians to demonstrate the gifts of prophecy, word of knowledge, and healing on the STREETS! As we demonstrate the love of God through revelation and seeing people healed in God’s power, their lives are changed—and so are we!

What a summer it's been! Thanks to everyone from Youth Works who traveled from NY, MI, IN, OH, WV, PA, KY, MA, WI and NJ to help us rehabilitate the house! Thanks also for the donation from a grant organization which will help us put on a first floor bathroom and refinish our sidewalks and stairs!

Even better than the physical restoration that has been happening, God has been putting a few and older people in our path who needed some encouragement. Heroin and alcohol are terrible addictions, destroying the inside and outside of a person's life. Please pray for those whom we are reaching out to, "Doyle", "Reba" "Hanna" and "Jon". Pray they get free of their addictions and wisdom if we are to be a part of that by letting them withdraw in our house with 24/7 prayer coverage. It's not a withdrawal you would want to do alone.

Please pray also for the praise and worship we have weekly on Monday nights at 7 on our porch, that it will continue to bring grace and inspiration to our community. All are welcome! Thanks Debbie and Mel for leading that!

We are enjoying a weekly DVD series on Tuesday's at 7 pm called, "Power and Love" which challenge us to live the basic Gospel more wholeheartedly. We are also showing Documentaries the 1st and 3rd Fridays at our house and then going out on the streets after to encourage people we see and pray for the neighborhood.

Please also pray for another few long term volunteer who can share in the mission. It's been a challenge to find people committed to this great challenge who can raise their own support and willing to work hard. Anna Hogan was here all summer and was and AMAZING gift. She definitely left an imprint on the people in this city! David was going to stay but ended up getting a job on an Indian Reservation. Sarah Littlefield is spending time here in between serving in Pittsburgh speaking about purity in the schools and pregnancy centers. She is such a gift!

And thank you for your prayers for me. It's been a challenge the last few weeks for various reasons and I covet your prayers to grow in intimacy and strength in the Lord and to grow in grace and wisdom to lay my life down for Jesus through each of the people he connects me to in this city. This is great training ground for any future mission work I will do in Asia or wherever He calls me. I'm so grateful for all He is doing in and through us.

Amidst a lot of violence and discouragement in the natural in our city this summer, we as God's kids, are beckoned to believe boldly that God is alive and well and is longing and willing to be KING of this City. He is pouring out his grace to all those hungry and thirsty to be quenched by it. Like Abraham, we have to SEE the promise as if it were for today and walk in faith and sacrifice to make it happen in His grace.

I pray you do that in your own neighborhoods. Reach out to the one God puts before you today and make yourself vulnerable to BECOME LOVE. This is our identity--our call as sons and daughters of the One who did it so valiantly and beautifully for us!

God bless you and thank you for praying!

Love,
Katie

Hello dear Friends!

Greetings from Mama Nita's in Steubenville! I wanted to share with you some wonderful thanksgiving and results of your prayers and support...

* David Neira is volunteering with us: a recent graduate of Ave Maria University and will likely commit to a year of volunteer service. He's an answer to all our prayers... If you'd like to contact him directly to be in his prayer/support team, here's his email: jdavidneira@gmail.com

* Anna Hogan, missionary in Jamaica this past year and graduate of Franciscan last year is with us for the summer raising funds and refreshing herself before returning to missions. If you know of any young volunteers who want to serve at least 6 months in Jamaica, please email her: ahogan117@yahoo.com

* a Grant is on it's way I hope! PNC bank will vote this week to see if we fit for a grant to put on the bathroom, sidewalk and handicapped entrance! Keep thanking God for His provision.

* May 5th Day of Prayer, Repentance and Dedication of our city to the Lord was wonderfully graced. We hope to continue praise and worship on the court house steps this summer monthly. Probably about 150 people attended and prayed with us.

* 10 Franciscan students stayed with us for 2 weeks and offered service in our city during May. They were wonderful!

* Early February we worked to get the local public pool which was deemed to be closed for the summer, opened if a non profit would run it. Katie Hess, also a FUS graduate wrote for a grant, connected with the local city government and a non profit and it's opening TODAY! Way to go Katie! Thanks God for your favor!

* Several people have stayed here for weekends when they were visiting the University and left us donations and that's helped us a lot. Pass the word for when you know of people visiting Steubenville that we have an unofficial bed and breakfast here!

* Our city has a new undercover drug task force called "the Shield". We are praying for God to use this group to clean up our city.
* I am officially unemployed...yes, it's a praise report (Romans 8:28). So that's allotted me more time for the mission but hopefully in the near future I will be working again by mid summer.

* Youth Works and Joshua summer projects will send volunteers this summer weekly to help us in the attic, and putting on the new bathroom and other jobs! Thanks to everyone ahead of time for helping!

* I go to Lake Tahoe for a week to celebrate my Mom's 75th birthday. I am so grateful for her example in my life and training me at a young age to serve. She has modeled it so well for me even to this day. Love you Mom!

* Mama Nita Slappy (whom we named this after) was diagnosed 2 months ago with breast cancer. She had a mastectomy, is cancer free according to both faith and the scans and is back to her wonderful self-- we are believing for her to live to over 100 years like her Mom!

* We had a wonderful evening of a talk by Zachary King about his conversion as a leader in the satanic cult to Catholicism. If you're interested to hear more, it's really worth learning and hearing: mysticforgod@yahoo.com in Lahigh Acres, Florida.

* A group of us from here and out of state are pressing in hard for the fullness of what God prophesied through Pope John Paul promising us the "New Springtime" that is about to emerge int he Catholic Church. We strongly believe it is key to know our identity as the Father's Sons and Daughters and to walk in belief of who He is and the fullness of whom the Church is which includes seeing His power and love released on a daily basis through our lives and around us. If this is also burning in your heart, please let us know as we want to connect us all together in prayer and purpose.

* We continue to have a prayer meeting on Monday nights, teaching DVD series and pot luck on Tuesdays with the Power and Love teaching series, and praying on the streets on Wednesday afternoons, and movie nights will start up again every other Fridays along with "porch ministry" of just talking to people in our neighborhood daily and praying for the city.

Prayer requests please:
* Grace for all the volunteers to adjust and hear His call and voice
* For us in this mission to press in harder to have our lives reflect the pure Gospel of Love.
* For blessings on my parents as they celebrate their 75th and my Dad transitions to a Board and Care home. (He didn't want to live in Steubenville : (
* A clear articulation of our mission, vision and what God's called us to
* Increased demonstration of God's power and love in supernatural ways in this city and through our mission
* Stirring of the hearts of the local Christians for passionate love of God, genuine ecumenism and willingness to sacrifice talent and resources for building up the city.

Thank so much everyone!! God bless you and may you each increase in JOY and CONFIDENCE of the Goodness of God without getting pulled down by any circumstances in your life. God's love never fails...

Blessings!

Katie

Steubenville Kid Mayor Pep Talk!! Join us!

There is SOOOooo much good happening in our town... God is on the move! Here's just one...

This is the letter we are sending to all the schools this week:
Dear Steubenville Schools:

We are excited to offer you an opportunity to join in a community wide outreach that we hope will bring a sense of solidarity, confidence and hope to Steubenville in a fun and energetic way, through the creativity, humor and insight of your students.

Inspired by the, “Kid President Pep Talk,” on Youtube, we began to question how to harness the optimism and energy we saw demonstrated in that short clip, and transform it into a dynamism that would motivate our community. We know the greatness and potential of Steubenville, but in recent months for a number of reasons, much of the positive energy has been stifled.

To turn that around in a positive direction we’ve created a “Kid Mayor Pep Talk” video creation opportunity that we would like to share with your school. It’s exciting! If you haven’t seen the Youtube video, just look up “Kid President Pep Talk” and you will understand.

As I write this, a promotional video is being produced by the Franciscan University of Steubenville TV Production Class that in the theme of the, “Kid President Pep Talk,” that will challenge your students to make Steubenville AWESOME. This promotional video will be shot with local students and be less than 5 minutes in length. It will ask your students, “What is it going to take to make Steubenville awesome? What are you going to do to make Steubenville awesome? What would you say in a pep talk for Steubenville?” It will introduce a video opportunity whereby students of grades 3 through 12 may submit videos of 2 minutes or less and all who submit will get public recognition. There will be separate categories for Elementary (3-6), Jr. High (7-8) and High School (9-12).

We are excited about the potential to invigorate our community that this project has, but it cannot be accomplished without your support. We would like to ask you as a school for 3 things:

1 . Select a contact person at your school through whom we can consistently communicate about this competition. Please have that person e-mail Katie Hess at khessfus@gmail.com, a volunteer at Mama Nita’s Coffeehouse Ministry, for further information.

2. Schedule a 20 minute school assembly on March 8 or during the week of March 11-15, during which the DVD including the “Kid President Pep Talk,” and promotional video for Steubenville Kid Mayor submissions will be shown on a big screen. For this event, your school would have to provide all equipment. We will bring the DVD to your school the afternoon of March 7, or the morning of March 8, dependent the pre-arrangements of your contact person.

We will be happy to have a member of our team come to your school to address the student body after the DVD and provide further details and motivation about this project. If viewing the DVD in a large assembly setting is not possible due to facility limitations or scheduling challenges, the DVD can be shown in all classes of one subject. We will have full details for this event as well as submission forms available on the United Peace Movement website www.unitedpeacemovement.com in the near future.

3. Schedule a second school assembly, April 19th, or after, to show a DVD of highlights from the video submissions of how to make Steubenville awesome, along with an award ceremony for participants at your school, a motivational speech, an address from a city leader, and/or presentation of opportunities to get involved (summer activities, volunteer opportunities). We would like to work with you to cater to the needs of your students and make this an energized event, celebrating the vision of the students and empowering the faith and potential they see.

Thank you for all that you are already doing to serve the students here in Steubenville. We look forward to working with you to build momentum that will empower student to articulate the dreams they have for this city, and give them courage and optimism in making those dreams a reality.

Sincerely,

Kid Mayor Planning Committee

This project is a joint volunteer effort of the United Peace Movement, Franciscan University of Steubenville TV Production class, Mama Nita’s Coffeehouse Ministry, and other energized citizens of Steubenville.
